Privacy policy

1. Who I am

Valico is an iPhone app developed and published by Matteo Papini, who is also the data controller for the processing described on this page. If you have any questions, write to support@matteopapini.com.

2. What data the app uses and where it stays

To work, Valico saves the following information on your iPhone:

• your name, if you choose to enter it (it's only used to greet you);
• your home currency, your favorite currencies with any reference amounts, and the start screen you chose;
• the payment method and fee you use to calculate “What you really pay”;
• the last foreign currency you used;
• a copy of the latest rates and trends downloaded, so you can use them offline.

This information stays only in your iPhone's storage. I don't receive it and I don't send it to anyone. You remove it by deleting the app; you can clear your name at any time from the app's Settings.

If you use iCloud or computer backups, app data may be included in your device's backups, which Apple manages under its own terms.

3. Location

Valico may ask permission to use your approximate location, while you use the app, to suggest the currency of the country you're in. The country is worked out on your phone, by comparing the coordinates with geographic boundaries included in the app: that's why it works without a connection.

The coordinates are not stored or sent to me or to anyone else. The app only keeps, on your phone, the last foreign currency it suggested. You can deny or revoke permission at any time in iOS Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services: Valico keeps working and you choose currencies by hand.

Location is handled by iOS and is covered by Apple's privacy policy.

4. Connection and exchange rates

The app connects to the internet only to download exchange rates and the historical trend of the pairs you look at. Requests say which currencies and which period are needed; they don't contain your name, your location, advertising identifiers or any other personal data.

As with any website or app, the service that answers receives technical connection data, for example the IP address the request comes from.

5. Third-party services

At the moment rates come from these services, which the app connects to directly:

• ExchangeRate-API, for current rates;
• Frankfurter, for historical trends, based on the European Central Bank's reference rates.

Their own privacy policies, published on their websites, apply to their practices. I share nothing with these services beyond what's needed to request the rates.

In the future I may route requests through a Valico server (hosted on Cloudflare) that downloads the rates once and distributes them. It would receive the same technical data described above and, if that happens, I'll update this page.

6. No tracking

Valico contains no ads, cookies, analytics tools or third-party libraries. It doesn't use your device's advertising identifier, doesn't build profiles and doesn't track you across the apps and websites of other companies, so it doesn't ask for the tracking permission required by iOS.

7. Information Apple may provide to me

If in iOS settings you chose to share analytics data with developers, Apple may make aggregated, anonymous information available to me, for example about app crashes. I can't identify you from this data.

8. Security

The app's connections use the encrypted HTTPS protocol. Because your data stays on your phone, protecting it also depends on your device: keep your passcode and iOS updates turned on.

9. Children

Valico isn't designed specifically for children and doesn't collect personal data, so it doesn't collect any from them either.

10. Your rights

The European data protection regulation (GDPR) gives you the right to request access to your data, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing and portability, and to object to processing. I don't receive or keep the data that stays on your iPhone: you can manage it directly from the app or by deleting the app. For any request, write to support@matteopapini.com.

If you believe your data isn't being handled properly, you can lodge a complaint with the Italian data protection authority (Garante per la protezione dei dati personali, garanteprivacy.it) or with the authority in your country.

11. Changes to this policy

If the practices described here change, for example with new features or the use of a Valico server, I'll update this page and the date at the top. I'll also flag important changes in the app's release notes.
